Even before the winter chill sets in, the planning for NAIDOC Week is already underway. Partnership Committee members joined an online planning meeting on Friday 13 March, hosted by Ramahyuck District Aboriginal Corporation, with local ACCOs and community organisations all represented to start shaping what this year’s NAIDOC celebration will look like.
NAIDOC Week is one of the most important celebrations in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander calendar, held each July to honour culture, history, and achievements. Getting the planning right takes months of work — and that’s exactly what this meeting was about.
The group reflected on what worked well at last year’s event and what could be improved. A key question was whether the event should stay in its current location or move — with several attendees raising the fact that last year’s venue was uncomfortably cold, and suggesting Kernot Hall as a warmer and potentially better alternative.
Brendan Witt from Ramahyuck in Morwell led the discussions, with the group also agreeing on dates for future planning meetings to keep momentum going. It was the kind of careful, community-driven planning that makes events like NAIDOC Week feel meaningful and well-organised — a reflection of the pride communities take in celebrating who they are.
